A folk tale about herrings

Some five hundred years ago,
Esashi was a remote little village
and people were suffering from lack of food.

Orii-sama, a religious old lady
sincerely prayed to God
to save people from hunger.

An old man came up, gave Orii-sama
a small bottle and said,
“Your fishing net should be as high as
your body height,
the number of squares in mesh should
be the same as your age.”

Pouring white water from the bottle
into the sea,
a shoal of herrings rushed into
Esashi’s shore.

Orii-sama told people how to
make the nets and
strictly warned them not to fish too much,
but people were dazzled by greed
and fished with bigger nets.

It has been said that
the herrings are all gone and
people can no longer catch them
because they ignored the warning of Orii-sama.

Take good care of limited resources,
Keep your hopes as big as you are,
Orii-sama, who is enshrined
in Ubagami-daigingu, Ezo-ichinomiya
talks to us, even today.
